Bush’s nomination of Ben Bernanke to replace Alan Greenspan is actually bad news for Harriet Miers. The Miers nomination has been attacked by the left for being too far right and has been attacked by the right for not being far-enough to the right. The secondary attack on Miers is that she is unqualified; she was only nominated because of Bush’s cronyism. Ignoring this, Bush is reportedly nominating Ben Bernanke, who is chairman of Bush’s Council of Economic Advisers. Another inside guy for a major position. Bernake may in fact be the best person for the job, but his nomination highlights a trend in appointments that the Senate is starting to be wary of.
